Country Gazette - 1978 |
In the fall of 1978 the new Country Gazette line-up recorded their first album "All this and money too" (Ridge Runner 0017). Country Gazette was Roland White, Alan Munde, Michael Anderson and Joe Carr. Guests were again Dave Ferguson, Slim Richey, Tommy Spurlock, Mike McCarty and Michael J. Dohoney.
Beneath the acoustic instruments they added drums, electric guitar and pedal steel guitar and recorded a fantastic new album. Two Flying Burrito Brothers songs were recorded for that album "I'm your boy" originally titled ("Hot Burrito #2") and "Devil in disguise", also The Beatles song "Eleanore Rigby" written by Lennon/McCartney and the Bob Wills number "Old fashioned love".

The Elton John song "Honky Cat" recorded for the "Don't give up your day job" album 1973 was recorded live at the "6th Annual Telluride Bluegrass and Country Music Festival" (June 22-24, 1979) and released on a sampler by Flying Fish records (224) as "Tellulive" 1980.

This Gazette line-up recorded an album with Japanese bluegrass band "The Lost City Mad Dogs: Waltz Across Texas" released on Japanese Music Mountain Records (002) 1983. This band toured US in 1979 and 1981. Album was recorded and produced by Slim Richey at Crystal Clear Sound in Dallas, Texas.

There was no Country Gazette release 1979/80 but a live recording of the current line-up (Munde, White, Carr & Anderson) was released 1984 on the Country Gazette album "Live on the road".
The Gazette members recorded again a few solo albums.
First Alan Munde released his "The banjo kid picks again" with all Country Gazette members (Alan Munde, Roland White, Michael Anderson and Joe Carr). Guests were Sam Bush, Slim Richey and Jerry Douglas - produced by Slim Richey.

Next was an album by Dan Huckabee (not a Gazette member but playing on a lot of Country Gazette solo albums) with Alan Munde and Michael Anderson and ex-Country Gazette member Dave Ferguson. Title of this album was "Acoustic Steel" which was recorded September 1979.

Also Joe Carr released a solo album "Otter Nonsens" with all Country Gazette members playing on it and guests Slim Richey and Robert Bowlin. This album was recorded Jannuary and February 1980. In the liner notes on that album Joe Carr thanks "The Gazette, Slim, Clarence White, Albert Lee, James Burton, Marty Stuart, Sam Bush, Gerald Jones and all the other players I have borrowed so freely from."

At the end of 1980 Alan Munde recorded two more albums with the Country Gazette members "Festival Favorites Vol. 1" and "Festival Favorites Vol. 2". Players on both albums were Alan Munde, Roland White, Joe Carr, Michael Anderson and as a guest Robert Bowlin on the fiddle. Most songs on those albums were traditional but also songs by Doug Dillard, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe and others. |

After all those solo albums Country Gazette recorded a new album winter 1980/81 with the title "American & Clean". Line-up was Alan Munde, Roland White, Michael Anderson and Joe Carr. Guests were Sam Bush, Slim Richey and Dahrell Norris on drums. Produced again by Slim Richey. All songs on that album, with the exception of two traditional tunes, were written by Texas/Oklahoma area songwriters. One song "Brother Slim" was written by Alan Munde and Byron Berline.

Alan Munde released two more solo albums. 1982 "Festival Favorites, Nashville Sessions" with the whole Gazette band. For this album they recorded the Byron Berline and Roger Bush song "Hot Burrito Breakdown" which was also recorded for the "A traitor in our midst" and also played by the Flying Burrito Brothers/Hot Burrito Revue. Other songs were from Bill Monroe, Eric Wiseberg, Ralph Stanley and traditionals.

1983 Alun Munde released: "Festival Favorites, Southwest Sessions", again with Country Gazette but with the exception of Joe Carr. He recorded songs from Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Jesse McReynolds, a selfwritten song and traditionals.
